Win Winter

By Paul Johnson | 17 June 2025

Wellington, our cool little capital, is not one to hibernate when winter rolls around. Instead, as daylight dwindles Wellingtonians embrace the chill, hopping from cosy coffee catch-ups to speakeasy bars and restaurants. We gorge on burgers in August, indulge in a tipple or two, wrap up warm and still explore the city's trails and green spaces.

If you're visiting Wellington in the Winter months, there's no need to retreat. Read on for our ideas for how to make the most out of a trip during the cooler months and don't forget to save 20% off your suite stay when you stay two nights or more with our Toast to Twenty promotion!

Embrace the café culture
When the temperature drops, there's nothing quite like warming up with a hot cup of coffee in one of Wellington's cozy cafes and Wellingtonian's are serious about their coffee.
Rug up and explore
It may sound counterintuitive, but exploring the city's lush green belt and coastal walks can be an ideal Winter activity, leaving you invigorated. Fortunately, Wellington's temperatures rarely plummet, with averages between 6° and 12°C.

While the city can be rather wet and windy, on those dryer Winter days, a brisk hike up to the Te Ahumairangi Hill lookout can be particularly rewarding and offers incredible views of the city.

Look to the stars
Head to Space Place for a warm and cosy stargazing experience in their planetarium. You can even take the iconic Wellington Cable Car to avoid any adverse weather.
