Local design collaboration - significant charity donation
Dress for Success Wellington is the lucky beneficiary of thousands of dollars
worth of charity support as a fortunate result of a collaborative project
between Wellington designer Nada Piatek of deNada and the Capital’s Bolton
Hotel, the city’s only Qualmark five star rated boutique property. Dress for
Success Wellington will receive corporate and interview-worthy clothing as the
Bolton Hotel phase in their new uniforms and pass on their old this week.
After many months of Piatek developing the new “corporate with a
personality” uniforms for the Bolton Hotel, front of house staff are now
stepping out in frill collared tailored jackets with striking red shirts that have
been chosen to fit with the hotels branding.
“The Bolton Hotel is a proudly independent Wellington Company with a strong
sense of our unique personality. We were looking with a fashion design label
with similar values and found it in deNada’s striking and individual designs.”
As staff step out in the strong and sassy suits, the clothes they leave behind
will be donated to Dress for Success Wellington - in particular to assist the
organisation’s Professional Women’s Group (PWG) members to further their
business attire.
The PWG is an international networking association for Dress for Success
Wellington clients who have recently entered the workforce, some for the first
time. It has been created to promote employment retention and career
advancement by providing valuable skill-building information while creating a
safe environment in which members can network with other professionals. It
is the first and only employment retention model that moves low-income
women towards self-sufficiency by addressing their social and economic needs
in relation to work, home and community.
Cyndi Christensen, Executive Manager of Dress for Success Wellington says
“The ongoing support of business women such as Nada Piatek at deNada and
Meredith Ryan at the Bolton Hotel helps facilitate the great outcomes that
Dress for Success Wellington achieves. The development of personal selfsufficiency
will impact on women’s homes, their families, whanau and
community as they become role models of success for the next generation.”
As a long time supporter of Dress for Success Wellington, deNada is further
gifting to the charity in the form of a profile building promotion and appeal to
their customers. For every item that customers bring into deNada stores to
donate to Dress for Success Wellington, deNada will match it with end of
season stock.
Writer In Residence
Writer Laurence Fearnley will reside at The Bolton Hotel as their official Writer In Residence beginning in November. Laurence will call the hotel home for a week every month to share writings and articles of interest with guests and staff. She also wishes to gain writing inspiration from Wellington through using The Bolton Hotel as her base.
The Writer in Residence concept was picked up by The Bolton Hotel’s manager Mark Angus after Laurence approached them about it.
“We wanted to provide guests with an opportunity to experience literature first hand by a New Zealand author in the comfort of the hotel. We felt this would appeal to business travelers who wanted the option to come down from their rooms and meet Laurence and other guests for a drink and chat about books, readings or articles to make their stay away from home that bit more enjoyable.”
Guests at The Bolton Hotel will hear readings from the author several times a month. She will host reading groups at the hotel’s café Brioche, sharing current work and other writings she feels guests and visitors will find interesting. She will also open the session for discussion among guests about the readings, providing an intellectually engaging stay at the hotel.
Laurence says:
“After reading about writer in residence programs offered at the Savoy Hotel in London and at Heathrow Airport, I wondered if a similar opportunity might be available here in New Zealand. The Bolton Hotel has a great atmosphere, attracting both business travellers and visitors on vacation. Wellington has a great cultural focus and it is my hope that there can be a real interaction between the hotel, myself as a writer and guests interested in books and writing. Above all, I think it will be both stimulating and fun to see what happens.”
Fearnley is a Dunedin-based writer who has published eight novels including the 2008 Montana Book Awards runner-up Edwin and Matilda. She has travelled to Antarctica as an Antarctica NZ Artist in Residence and was the 2007 Robert Burns Fellow. Among the new pieces she will share with The Bolton’s guests is a new novel set in Aoraki/Mount Cook called The Hut Builder.

Bisque Restaurants Review – Cuisine Magazine 2010
Cuisine Magazine
April 2010
Nowadays a hotel is about the last place middle-class New Zealanders would chose to dine... A notable exception is Wellington's Bisque on Bolton, owned by local hero Stephen Morris, who has cooked for the Queen at Huka Lodge and won a string of awards. His restaurant is on the mezzanine floor of the five-star Bolton Hotel and fitted with the same contemporary artworks and elegant suede chairs that grace the hotel's suites, studios and rooms.
